Brand new and first offered last summer at nearly $9 million, the residence offers walls of glass and north-facing views of the Hollywood Hills from nearly every room. In addition to the house plans you order, you may also need a site plan that shows where the house is going to be located on the property. You might also need beams sized to accommodate roof loads specific to your region. You may also need a septic design unless your lot is served by a sanitary sewer system. Many areas now have area-specific energy codes that also have to be followed.

Now an arguably even bigger name has followed suit—records indicate an $8.6 million, fourth-floor unit at the same building was recently acquired by actor Matt Damon. The two-bed, two-bath home sits on a quarter-acre lot, and Putman boasted the gardens and terraces as a draw for potential buyers. Plus, it has a great view of the city, she said, making it the ultimate LA outdoor space. Putman said the architect does not design much anymore, but she believes this is one of his greatest homes.

The average build price for American homes is between $100 - $155 per square foot. Therefore, if we take the 1,876 sq ft from the average three-bedroom home sold, you can expect to pay about $187,600 on the low end. Over time, this can increase the home’s market value because there will always be families looking for extra space. So, if and when the time comes for you to sell, you’ll likely sell your house quickly and make a profit due to demand. The second level includes two bedrooms (or one bedroom and a loft) and one full bathroom. With fast turnover and intense buyer competition, it might be difficult to find exactly what you want.

With over 15 years experience in the home design industry, Brandon has a hand in every aspect of the day-to-day operations of our company, in addition to ensuring an unparalleled level of service to our customers. "This is definitely the exact kind of house where you would dream," Gambino said in an interview with USA TODAY. "It's a very special house where people immediately get, you know, emotionally connected when they're there." Building from one of our blueprints is more cost-effective than buying a home and renovating it, which is already a huge plus. Our services are unlike any other option because we offer unique, brand-specific ideas that you can't find elsewhere. Over the years, as needs change, you can convert the extra rooms into a guest room, a craft or hobby room, or a home gym.

With three bedrooms in your floor plan, you can count on flexibility, ample space to customize and design your interiors, and excellent future market value. As these plans usually cater to families, they are ideal for couples with children, as well as those who are planning on growing their families in the future. On the second level you’ll find two bedrooms, one full bathroom, and a spacious loft. The bonus room above the two-car garage would be great as a home office, den, or exercise room. Filter by the bedroom, bathroom, garage, dimensions, home styles, and kitchens.

This design is ready to meet your needs, whether you’d like to use it as a downsized primary residence or a vacation cottage. Once you step instead, you’ll find yourself in an open living room that moves seamlessly into the large kitchen and dining area, which includes access to the rear covered porch. The first-floor master suite features a private bathroom with dual sinks and a walk-in closet.

Discounts are only applied to plans, not to Cost-to-Build Reports, plan options and optional foundations and some of our designers don't allow us to discount their plans. Gambino said the Glassell Park area where the home is located is popular among artists, musicians and actors. Designed by LA architect William King and built in 1982, the listing comes with several gathering spaces in and around the home, with charming gardens, a wraparound deck and a garage that could be used as studio space. Unless you buy an “unlimited” plan set or a multi-use license you may only build one home from a set of plans. With Monster House Plans, you can select your favorite design, modify it, request a 3D modeling, and deliver these documents to your architect and builder. Architectural features are any permanent structures in the house, including stairways, doors, windows, plumbing, electricity, fireplaces, and shelves.

In this collection, you'll find everything from tiny house plans to small 3 bedroom house plans to luxury house designs. You’re sure to love the attractive country style exterior of this plan, and all the convenience that an open floor plan can offer. The large and welcoming covered front porch will lead you inside, where you’re greeted with a spacious living room that transitions into an expansive and modern kitchen. Equipped with a cook-top island and plenty of space for meal prep, you can choose whether to dine at the snack bar, in the nearby dining area, or al fresco on the screened patio. A large laundry area is just steps away from the kitchen, which includes easy access to the two-car garage. The master suite on this level features two walk-in closets, and a bathroom with dual sinks, tub, shower, and separate toilet compartment.

The 2,473-square-foot property, built in 1996, was sold on April 12, 2024. This two-story home boasts a generous living space with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Additionally, the house comes with a two-car garage, allowing for convenient vehicle storage and additional storage space. Two bedrooms are located in one wing of this plan and feature generous walk-in closets and access to a full bath.

Three bedroom house plans give parents with 1 or 2 children or couples planning on having children, enough space to house everyone. This layout is also perfect for an older couple that might someday have elderly parents join the household but don’t want to invest in an entire in-law suite. A three bedroom house plan offers a good balance of affordable housing with enough space for your family to feel comfortable in their own home.

With thousands of options to choose from, you will easily find the perfect design. Explore the rest of our Modern Farmhouse plans with 3 bedrooms on our website. The second level includes two bedrooms (one with a walk-in closet), a full bathroom, a small library, and a bonus room.

12 Best 3D Printing Software Programs In 2024 Free And Paid

3d printing design software

Even though it isn’t the most user-friendly software, it hosts a large set of features while running smoothly. The speed of the software is particularly evident in terms of baking textures. It also works with partner software and extensions as additional customisations. Get the most from your printer with software designed to suit your workflow. You can also slice STL files for printing, but to just call OctoPrint a 3D slicer is underselling it. MeshLabs supports the improvement of colors in prints based on contrast, saturation and sharpness of colors – very useful for color 3D printing – as well as aligning raw 3D scans to improve them.

Is There Free 3D Printing Software?

It’s particularly forgiving to beginners, thanks to being a fun and very predictable way to dabble in 3D design for 3D printing for the first time. Our top pick for the best CAD software for 3D printing, Fusion 360 is developed by AutoDesk, the company behind AutoCAD, Maya, and other leading CAD, animation, and visual effects programs. Despite FreeCAD’s drab interface, the program is a powerful design tool that lends itself well to 3D printing. Developed by Autodesk, Fusion360 is a complete CAD environment that’s stacked to the rafters with professional-grade features. You can employ virtually every modeling technique under the sun (parametric, mesh, freeform, etc) to prototype, design, and iterate for virtually any 3D printing application. SelfCAD aims to deliver a smooth and intuitive modeling experience without sacrificing advanced features so that you can confidently tackle even the most demanding projects without spending a fortune. Though not specifically geared to 3D printing, FreeCAD does ease the process of preparing models for printing with file export options that include OBJ and STL.

3d printing design software

Anything complex can take quite a while, but simpler designs aren’t too time-consuming. A freeware version, SketchUp Make, and a paid version with additional functionality, SketchUp Pro, are also available. Another great feature that OpenSCAD has is the ability to import 2D drawings and extrude them as 3-dimensional. It uses a part profile from drawings made in a standard sketching software and use the SXF file to do this. With its stronger focus on programming, OpenSCAD may appeal to some while alienating others.

Some more features of the Tinker CAD are that it supports STL files, gives users the facility to import their 2D or 3D models for printing, and enables users to execute and operate laser cutting. As the name suggests, this amazing 3D printing/modeling tool is free for users. It comes equipped with some of the best features and specs that let you design life-like designs of any shape or size. We expect to see good 3D software exhibit a strong user experience and an interface that’s intuitive and navigable.

It features a streamlined, intuitive interface sided by a set of tools all usable with the taps and swipes we’ve all grown accustomed to in this day and age of smartphones and portable devices. If it cost $500 for the exact same feature list, most people wouldn’t bat an eyelid. Focused on simplicity and ease of use, SelfCAD offers all the necessary tools to create whilst still retaining a short learning curve that beginners can use. Built with 3D printing in mind, SelfCAD also includes browser-based slicing tools for preparing your STL or G-code files for 3D printing. With powerful tools for accomplishing almost any industrial 3D design, Fusion 360 really is an incredible piece of software. It has built-in features to assess stresses that components of your 3D design will encounter, allowing designers to locate potential weak points before printing.

Blender — advanced free 3D modeling software

Python works well with Arduino hardware, and is especially well-suited for projects that use sensors and other components. You don’t need to be a coding wizard to start using Python in this way, but you will need some familiarity and experience. Once you’ve learned the basics of making, you’ll likely be craving some more challenging and stimulating projects. Since it first came onto the scene in 2011, TinkerCAD has been a great choice for beginners looking to get started with making their own projects. If you’re new to the world of making, you’ll likely have some specific needs and requirements that won’t apply to more experienced folks.

With a solid free version that lets you work on up to 10 projects as well as a low-cost pro plan, this 3D printing software is one of the more budget-friendly options. With its intuitive user interface and comprehensive 3D designing capabilities, AutoDesk AutoCAD is an ideal choice for 3d printing projects of any size or complexity level. Developed by Autodesk, Inventor comes in different packages depending on level of proficiency (student, professional etc.).

When linked via USB, MatterControl can slice new models created from scratch in the CAD portion of the software. For experienced users that would like more advanced features, a MatterControl Pro version is available for a fee. The object construction system lends itself to creating new and interesting shapes, as much as painstakingly recreating existing objects in a 3D space. It also means you can really focus on detailed sculpting, which should come out looking great - it is, after all, some of the best 3D printing software around. Despite an initially complex and unconventional modeling and sculpting method, this arrangement does make it easier for beginners to join the fun. It also comes with advanced modeling tools such as Boolean operations or extrusion tools to combine and modify those objects.

By expanding skins with the thickness of walls, features will be better supported. Use recommended settings for quick and easy print setup using intuitive sliders to prepare your print, or use custom settings to individually tweak over 200 unique slicing parameters. He also covers storage, including SSDs, NAS drives and portable hard drives. He started writing in 1986 and has contributed to MicroMart, PC Format, 3D World, among others. You'll also need to make sure your hardware can manage heavy workloads in 3D software.

It has a learning curve, but once you’ve mastered it, you can achieve pretty much anything. Ultimaker CURA is another great free 3D printing software with a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for designers of all skill levels to quickly create stunning 3D designs. This open-source software includes real-time incremental slicing, 3D preview, and more.

Creo is notoriously challenging to master because it’s geared towards the most complex CAD needs and requirements. As such, we can’t recommend it for beginners, but only to seasoned professionals and businesses. It’s through and through a professional application, making it particularly suited to uses where high-quality, precise 3D prototypes and models are required. SolidWorks allows you to adjust model settings in preparation for 3D printing. Although not a new addition, Blender also offers export to a selection of the most popular 3D printing formats, including STL.

It even has a 2D animation pipeline, if you need to combine 2D elements with 3D models. The pipelining aspect of this tool is perfect for team collaboration, where artists can work on their part of a scene, and then watch it come together with elements created by others. However, while we think 3ds Max is a feature-rich 3D creation software, packed with pro-level functionality, it’s not the easiest program to use, and it's not totally versatile. It’s perfectly capable of animations, for example, but some professional animators and VFX artists may be better served by Maya. Below you'll find full write-ups for each of the entries on our best 3D modeling software list. We've tested each one extensively, so you can be sure that our recommendations can be trusted.

From the beginner-friendly drag-and-drop settings to the advanced customizations that experienced users can take advantage of, Ultimaker CURA has everything you need to get started. Like FreeCAD, Blender is also open-source 3D printing software, which means that it’s free to use, share, or modify. The app also includes an integrated slicing feature that cuts objects into separate layers automatically so they can be printed more efficiently on 3D printers. From creating detailed industrial models to making intricate sculptures or jewelry pieces, FreeCAD offers a lot of possibilities for 3D printing. TinkerCAD is a free CAD software with features like advanced mirroring, boolean operations, 3d extrusions, as well as multiple file formats for export/import.

– Fusion 360 — best 3D printer modeling software (if you can afford it)

The supports can be configured on an individual basis so the user has complete control over each feature for maximum flexibility. Like the other AutoDesk options on this list, AutoDesk Maya is better suited for professionals with more experience in 3D printing that are looking for highly capable software with extensive features. In addition, it supports several common slicing engines such as CuraEngine and Slic3r so users don’t have to switch between different apps when preparing objects for printing.

FreeCAD [Modeling]

The modeling and 3D printing software is available on subscription or a buy-it-once perpetual license. These can then be imported into a slicer to prepare the model for 3D printing and create a G-code file with all the instructions the printer needs to complete the print. Suitable applications, and the features that enable this, are also a major difference between free CAD programs for 3D printing and paid CAD programs. AutoCAD is more ideal for those needing more powerful editing tools as this software is a bit more complex and difficult to use than Fusion 360. This open-source slicer software supports three different slicing engines; Slic3r, CuraEngine, and Skeinforge. Repetier can also handle up to 16 extruders with different filament types and colors simultaneously, and you can visualize your end result before printing.

CAD Software (Computer-Aided Design)

It’s an open-source 3D creation tool supported by a generous community of developers and users, and free for personal and commercial use. CAD software gives you tools to create a 3D model from scratch that can then be processed, sliced, and sent to a 3D printer for printing. SketchUp Free is a free browser-based CAD program used to create high-quality 3D models and designs without navigating complex systems. If the thought of firing up a complex, professional free modeling software for 3D printing has you worried, then TinkerCAD should be your go-to first and best CAD for 3D printing.

Once designed, you can easily export your models as STL files for 3D printing, and view them in any previewer, as well as posting them to Facebook using their 3D viewing features. Perhaps after ascending TinkerCAD’s shallow learning curve you’ll want something more advanced, but as a tool to learn a 3D printing software modeling tool, TInkerCAD is a fantastic introduction. Though it has a steeper learning curve, Blender has huge depth to it, making it one of the most complete free 3D software tools out there. This depth makes it a very versatile 3D modeling tool, with uses ranging from film VFX, video games, 3D model design, and it’s also used as a 3D design software for 3D printing.

3d printing design software

CATIA was initially designed to meet aviation’s internal requirements that gained popularity and evolved into something beyond. You can also use the measurement tool to accurately calculate the linear distance between two mesh points, which is impressive. For those who don’t know, meshes are basically wireframes of products used to determine the core basics of a model. Moreover, Autodesk helps you streamline your project development and ensures a faster delivery while keeping the overall quality intact.

Unlike other conventional programs, Meshmixer does not allow one to build 3D models from scratch. Nevertheless, it is handy for repairing, hollowing, and filling pre-existing models. This free 3D design software program is good for both beginners and professionals. The best 3D printing software programs currently on the market are Tinkercad, Blender, and SketchUp. This article will discuss those three programs and more as part of this review of 10 of the best 3D modeling software programs for beginners, and how they work. Like the canvas vs the cel, artists and animators need different spaces to create, so factor in how you’ll use the software.

Even more advanced or complex 3D programs, like Rhino and 3ds Max, still needs to be accessible, despite steeper learning curves. Beyond a comprehensive suite of design and modeling tools, Creo allows users to optimize designs for 3D printing by detecting potential errors, providing optimal print positioning, and offering support simulation. Aside from this, Blender features a full-fledged modeling and sculpting toolbox to create high-quality 3D models.

On a more granular level, CAD software for 3D printing also allows you to export it to a file format, such as STL or OBJ, compatible with and ready for slicing. Spending hours modeling a pristine 3D model only to find out your 3D printer isn’t up to the task is not an experience we recommend to anyone. Because SketchUp Free runs on any browser and has a companion SketchUp Viewer app to visualize models from a mobile device, it’s the perfect CAD program if you’re often on the move. Every model starts from a basic geometric shape, which can then be modified, scaled, added to, and subtracted from to create solid models for 3D printing.

Meshmixer is an advanced free 3D printing software made by Autodesk® that can be used to view, design, edit, modify, and repair STL files. The software can spot potential problems or ‘weaknesses’ in your model’s design and will fix them automatically. Meshmixer is feature-rich and offers features like 3D sculpting, drag-and-drop mesh mixing, 3D lattices, and patterns, mesh smoothing, and more. Another 3D modeling software program for beginners is Meshmixer, from Autodesk.

Our Readers' Favorite Small-ship Ocean Cruise Lines of 2023

smaller cruise ships

As for variety, the smaller ships offer both fixed and flexible dining options. Being part of Carnival Cruise Line’s Dream class, which consists of larger vessels in the fleet. The Carnival Fantasy class, a hallmark of Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet from the 1990s, has seen several of its iconic ships retire over recent years.

What Is The Smallest Carnival Cruise Ship?

It’s essential to compare specific itineraries and dates to get an accurate price comparison. This variety ensures that travelers have options, whether they prefer a cozier cruise experience or a mega-ship’s grandeur and extensive amenities. Here we take a look at the smallest Carnival cruise ships in the fleet and whether they might be suitable for you. These factors combine to create a communal vibe where passengers often develop friendships and enjoy a shared cruise experience on a smaller ship. The advantage of less crowding on a smaller cruise ship is that passengers can enjoy a more peaceful and relaxed experience.

Is There a Difference in the Quality or Variety of Dining Options on the Smallest Ship?

Excursions by kayak and inflatable skiffs enable cruise adventurers to see Alaska and its wildlife. The Celebrity Xploration is the smallest cruise ship in the world at just 320 gross tons and a passenger capacity of 16. Royal Caribbean Group’s Celebrity Cruises operates the small vessel, and the ship mainly sails the Galapagos Islands.

The Cons of Sailing on a Smaller Cruise Ship

smaller cruise ships

A small vessel is conducive to this goal, as you’ll likely see the same people daily. Meals feature freshly caught Alaskan seafood, and the ship encourages holistic experiences too, such as in its Himalayan salt room. Expedition leaders help cruisers learn about the geography and ecology of Alaska’s pristine Inside Passage. The Chichagof Dream is outfitted for active explorations of the thrilling Alaskan coast as well as its remote wilderness areas. Glacial fjords are seen up close in skiffs, and guests of all skill levels are invited to kayak.

Smaller ships offer a cozier and more intimate setting, making it easier for crew members to establish rapport and provide attentive service. Sailing on a smaller cruise ship has its own set of pros and cons, offering a different experience compared to larger cruise ships. Swell, a unique 88-foot converted tugboat built in 1912, carries up to 12 guests in six private en-suite cabins. The classic wooden construction of the vessel has been maintained, and cabins are paneled with wood. There is a hot tub on the aft deck, and a cozy lounge that doubles as a dining area.

Retired Small Ships from the Carnival Fantasy Class

For example, the smallest vessels offered by cruise line giant Carnival Cruise Line are the Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise, which each have a guest capacity of over 2,000. On smaller vessels, passengers tend to entertain themselves rather than be entertained. Therefore, lounges on small ships are more intimate, and the only entertainment is usually done cabaret-style. There’s rarely room for multiple dining venue, so small ships ordinarily have a single restaurant that can accommodate all guests in a single open seating.

Fantasy Class – The Smallest Carnival Class of Ship

Small ship cruise travel is the best (often the only) way to explore more exotic vacation destinations. You won't find much in the way of theater productions or casinos, but that leaves room for educational pursuits. Small ships commonly organize enrichment seminars on everything - from local culture to photography. Sometimes local performers (historians, dancers, and musicians) are welcome on board to entertain.

Small ships in Alaska typically carry fewer than 100 passengers and have a far calmer vibe. You wake up to the sound of birds and days consist of kayaking or hiking, rather than shopping and taking helicopter tours. A small ship Alaska cruise is one of the most intensive ways to explore Alaska's coast. Unlike the massive ships that ply the waters of the Gulf of Alaska and Inside Passage, small Alaska cruises can dock in isolated bays and fjords or picture-perfect small towns far from the crowded tourist trail. Cruise fares vary, but those booking a deluxe stateroom or suite do get their alcohol included in the price.

An open bar, all shore tours, hotel accommodations and airport transfers are included in the price. The ships cruise between Sitka and Juneau, stopping for nature activities at places like Admiralty and Brothers Islands, with glacier-viewing at Tracy or Endicott Arms along the way. There are no traditional port calls on these cruises; your time is almost entirely spent on the water, with stops for hiking, wildlife-viewing and from-land fishing. Misty Fjord features a hull modeled after Alaskan commercial fishing boats, while Kruzof Explorer is a converted Bering Sea crab fishing vessel. Fortunately for adventurous travelers several cruise lines offer small ship Alaska cruises -- and they’re expanding their fleets, itineraries and excursion offerings.

It’s worth clarifying at this point that there are various ways you could judge the smallest cruise ships in the world, but I’ve decided to go with gross tonnage. This isn’t a measurement of weight, despite the name, but of volume – essentially the amount of space on board. The smaller ship and exclusivity of the destination means that higher fares are often charged. Everyone loves to talk about the biggest cruise ships in the world – these magnificent feats of engineering that are essentially floating cities. Like all Hurtigruten's ships, you'll also find a science centre on board, so you can learn more about the intriguing landscapes and wildlife you'll be seeing on your cruise.

Take an oh-so-stylish cruise on S.S LA Venezia, an opulent river ship swathed in fine fabrics and finished with gilded accents and plenty of iconic Murano glass (she’s sailing to and from Venice, after all). Save and organize every aspect of your trip including cruises, hotels, activities, transportation and more. Book hotels confidently using our AAA Diamond Designations and verified reviews.

Each of them provides top-quality, small ship cruising experiences on comparably larger vessels. Katarina Line (Croatia-based) also operates as an international travel booking agency for other lines. Katarina owns around 40 small-sized ships and yachts in the region of Adriatic Sea (Dalmatian Coast).

Among the smallest ships in the Carnival fleet and similar to the last 2 existing smallest Carnival cruises ships they will be missed by those who sailed on them. In contrast, the smallest ships in Carnival’s fleet, such as those from the Fantasy class like the Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise, boast a length of 855 feet but have a gross tonnage of 70,367. This indicates a more efficient use of space, with more amenities packed into a slightly shorter length.

Uncruise offers one of the longest Alaska cruise seasons in the industry, with departures from April through September. She has worked in the cruise industry since 2015 and has taken over 30 cruises. Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays. These are incredible itineraries where you’ll fly on a small aircraft into the polar region before trekking to your ship, which permanently resides amongst the glacial islands. Fire, death of crew members aboard two cruise ships that departed from Florida

cruise ship fire

Social media posts show flames spewing from the funnel of the ship and black smoke billowing in the air. The Carnival Freedom was in Freeport as scheduled Sunday, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival said there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems. Firefighterswere able to control the blaze in about two hours and there were no reportedmajor injuries. There were some changes to the itinerary, however, because ofthe fire and weather.

Sunday Forecast

The Coast Guard was working to determine if the Ocean Navigator could continue to be "seaworthy" as crews ventilated it after the fact, CBS affiliate WGME reported. The ship was carrying 128 passengers, most of whom were sightseeing on land Wednesday, in addition to 82 crew members, according to Portland officials and the U.S. Both said the crew member who suffered burns was the only person injured in the fire.

Which Carnival Freedom cruises have been canceled?

The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted and has activated their response team. The cruise is expected to continue sailing to Freeport and arrive on Sunday morning. Two crew members fighting the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation, according to Carnival.

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. The blaze and its aftermath were a far cry from the infamous 2013 fire on the Carnival Triumph, which started in the engine room while the ship was at sea. It became known as the “poop cruise” because of the waste disposal issues that result when a vessel with thousands of people onboard loses power.

It has a capacity for nearly 3,000 guests but the company did not specify how many were on the current trip. “Saturday afternoon, Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was approximately 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport as a replacement port of call for the cancelled visit to Princess Cays (due to adverse weather),” the letter explained. The Carnival Freedom cruise ship experienced its second fire in less than two years, and passenger footage caught the flames with smoke coming from the ship’s exhaust funnel Saturday afternoon. "All guests and crew are safe, and the ship's guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore," the statement said. The damage would "require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel" after disembarking guests in Port Canaveral on Monday, the company said in an updated statement following the assessment.

In that incident, the ship ran aground and passengers ended up being flown home under sometimes-chaotic circumstances days later. Many who were stuck on land awaiting flights watched the ship depart without them. Dramatic videos emerged on social media Thursday, showing flames and thick black smoke pouring out of the smokestack of a Carnival Cruise ship in the Turks and Caicos. The statement closed, noting, "Carnival apologized to all those guests who are impacted and offered special thanks to the crew who handled the situation on the ship effectively and according to safety protocols." Both Carnival Freedom cruises scheduled for this week have been cancelled. Carnival said guests who had booked those cruises would receive full refunds and future cruise credits.

Upon docking, all infected passengers were moved to area hotels for isolation. The Freedom ship will be taken to Freeport for a "repair to the funnel," Carnival said. All guests impacted by the changes in upcoming trips have been notified.

As the ship only recently came out of dry dock, it may be some time before her funnel is repaired, depending on how the work can be completed. When the fire was first reported, the ship’s emergency alert signal was sounded and guests were assembled at their muster stations to don their lifejackets as the situation was quickly evaluated. A statement from Carnival said that Carnival Freedom remained in Grand Turk, where the ship was docked when the fire broke out, until Carnival Conquest arrived on May 28. Carnival Freedom served as a floating hotel for the 2,504 passengers on its last cruise until they could be moved to Carnival Conquest, which then transported them back to Port Canaveral, their original port of disembarkation. The Freedom passengers’ situation is reminiscent of the experience guests had on the Norwegian Escape in March.

Photos and videos shared with FOX 35 and on social media showed flames spewing out of the left side of the ship's exhaust funnel, as dark smoke billowed into the air. "Carnival Conquest’s next cruise, departing May 27 from Miami has been cancelled and that ship will be deployed to Grand Turk to transport Freedom guests back to Port Canaveral," the company explained. "Carnival Conquest will arrive to Grand Turk on Saturday, May 28 and guests aboard Carnival Freedom will transfer to Carnival Conquest for the voyage back to Port Canaveral, arriving on Monday, May 30."

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said. In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip. On Monday, the ship was set to go to the shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas to undergo the required repairs. The statement went on to note that the the fire happened "in the engine room on a generator" and added that the exact cause of the fire was still under investigation.

"The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs." As photos and video taken aboard the Carnival Freedom illustrate, black smoke and flames poured out of the ship’s funnel as passengers donned life jackets and were evacuated from the vessel’s upper decks. In 2016, more than 500 passengers and crew were evacuated from a burning ship about a mile off Puerto Rico's north coast.

The ship was around 20 miles from Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, heading to Freeport. The ship departed from Port Canaveral on Thursday for a four-day trip. PortMiami, Florida’s largest port, served 7.3 million passengers during the 12-month fiscal year 2023. That was tops for cruise ports worldwide, nearly twice the four million passengers seen the prior year and more than its previous record of 6.8 million passengers set in 2019. Then it quickly left on its next tour that same evening, the company said. Carnival said it also continues to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike.

The Carnival Freedom left from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Thursday and was supposed to travel for several days through the Bahamas before returning Monday to Port Canaveral. It was not immediately clear how many passengers and crew were on board the Freedom when the fire erupted, but the cruise ship can accommodate 2,980 guests and 1,150 crew members at capacity. A cruise ship exhaust funnel works as a smokestack to lift emissions away from the deck and from passengers and crew. The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises.

According to the statement, most of the ship's 2,504 passengers were ashore at the time the fire broke out. Caitlin O'Kane is a New York City journalist who works on the CBS News social media team as a senior manager of content and production. She writes about a variety of topics and produces "The Uplift," CBS News' streaming show that focuses on good news. The Conquest's next trip, scheduled to depart from Miami on Friday, has been canceled, as was the Freedom's next trip, scheduled to begin Saturday.

No one on board the ship was injured, but Carnival said two fire crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation. On Saturday afternoon, the Carnival Freedom caught fire on the port side of the exhaust funnel, a kind of chimney meant to release smoke and emissions. Black smoke and flames were visible in a video provided to NBC6, which first reported the incident. The cruise line said there were no reports of passenger injuries, although two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation and part of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, according to Carnival. It should be noted that the ship’s funnel is an exhaust vent and it is possible for the vessel to run safely without the characteristic “wings” that make Carnival cruise ships so distinctive.
